Kwanzan cherry blossoms are a type of flowering cherry tree known for their stunning, large, fluffy pink flowers. Kwanzan begin to bloom in April and lasts for weeks. Kwanzans were developed in Edo period in Japan as a result of multiple similar species of hybrids based on Oshima cherry. It is a desiduous tree with a maximum length of 1–9 meters and 8 meters spread.
Name and origin
Scientific name: Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’
Origin: Japan (but now popular all around the world, especially in parks and gardens)
Flowers: These plants bloom in clusters of double pink blossoms — meaning each flower has many petals (often 20–30 per flower), making them look extra full and rich.
Bloom time: Usually mid to late spring (often a little later than other cherry blossom varieties like Yoshino).
Tree shape: Kwanzan trees grow to about 25–30 feet tall and have a beautiful, spreading, vase-like shape.
Leaves: Interestingly, after the flowers bloom, the new leaves often come out bronze or copper-colored before turning green.
